Shopify Product Tax Code Updates — What Changed and What To Do

Overview

In February 2026, Shopify updated their product tax code (PTC) library. These changes affect how product categories are structured and which codes are available for use. If your products are assigned to any expired or restructured codes, their tax treatment may not be applied correctly.

What are Shopify Product Tax Codes?

Shopify Product Tax Codes (PTCs) are standardized identifiers that classify what type of product you are selling. Zamp uses these codes to determine the correct tax rules to apply in each state. If a product is assigned the wrong code — or an expired code — it may be taxed incorrectly.

Types of changes

New codes (722)

Shopify has added 722 restructured and/or new codes to their library. These are purely additive — your current setup is not affected, and no action is required. That said, if you sell products in the categories below, you may now have access to more granular classifications that could improve tax accuracy.

Previously, a seller might have assigned a broad code like Apparel & Accessories > Clothing to children's clothing. New codes now allow more specific classifications such as:

• Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Baby & Children's Clothing > Baby & Children's Bottoms > Jeans
• Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Baby & Children's Clothing > Baby & Children's Bottoms > Joggers

Similarly in Home & Garden, categories like kitchen appliances and lawn equipment now have much deeper subcategory trees available.

A few other examples of new product tax codes:

• Knitting Patterns and Crochet Patterns (under Arts & Entertainment)
• Medical Teaching Equipment Accessories (under Business & Industrial)
• Cannabis Products (under Food, Beverages & Tobacco — note that cannabis tax rules are highly state-specific)
• Sofa Beds (under Furniture)
• Hearing Aid Accessories (under Health & Beauty)

Should you review? If you sell home goods, kitchen products, or apparel and want the most precise tax classification for your products, it's worth browsing the updated Shopify PTC library. Your current tax codes have been mapped by Zamp as needed; however, you have the option to make them more detailed if desired, which will increase the accuracy of your sales tax calculations.

Restructured codes (84)

84 codes have been moved to new category paths. The Shopify code ID remains the same, but the category hierarchy has changed. For example:

Why this matters: Restructured codes may carry different tax implications depending on the state. For example, popcorn kernels classified as a kitchen accessory may be taxable in a state where food items are exempt. The product hasn't changed, but how it's categorized — and therefore how it's taxed — has.

We recommend reviewing any products that fall into these categories. If you're unsure whether the new category path changes your tax treatment, submit a support ticket and our team can help you confirm.

Expired codes (24)

24 codes are no longer valid. Products assigned to an expired code will not have a recognized tax classification, which means tax rules may not apply correctly. You should reassign any products using these codes to an active replacement as soon as possible.

Renamed codes (2)

2 codes have been given updated display names. Their IDs and tax treatment remain the same — no action is required.

What you should do

1. Check if any of your products use expired codes. This is the most urgent step. Reference the expired codes table below and look for any matches in your Shopify product catalog.
2. Update any expired code assignments. In Shopify, go to Products > select the product > edit the Tax code field and assign an active replacement code. (Step-by-step instructions are in the next section.)
3. Review products in restructured categories. If you sell products in any of the 84 restructured categories, confirm the tax treatment still looks correct. If you're not sure, submit a support ticket and our team will review it with you.
4. Optionally, explore the new codes. If you sell home goods, kitchen products, or apparel, browsing the updated PTC library may reveal more precise classifications for your products.

How to update a product tax code in Shopify

1. Log in to your Shopify admin.
2. Go to Products and select the product you want to update.
3. Scroll down to the Pricing section.
4. Under Tax code, search for and select an active code.
5. Save your changes.
