Zamp Tax for Stripe: Invoices & Addresses

Stripe: how Zamp Tax finds a customer address on invoices, and why an invoice with no address won't get tax calculated.

Address Requirements

Remember that sales tax is determined by where the products or services were provided to, so Zamp needs to know where the customer was located. If you don't have address information available, we won't be able to successfully determine how to report a transaction. As a result, you must have addresses available for your invoices.

How does Zamp retrieve the Customer Address for Stripe Transactions?

Zamp will use the same customer locations that Stripe Tax used to calculate tax. Stripe finds the customer address from three places:

  1. The Shipping Adddress

  2. The Billing Address

  3. The Default Billing Address on the Customer's Default Payment Method

Note: if none of these address sources are available, the invoice is not imported into Zamp and no tax is calculated for it.

Once tax has been calculated, Stripe will tell us which source the address was pulled from. In the event Stripe does not, Zamp will initiate an address check in the order of the above.

Additional Verification

To ensure accuracy, Zamp will confirm the address is in the state where Stripe calculated tax. If it is not, Zamp will look for addresses in the customer profile until it either finds one that matches the state used for calculation, or we'll assign it to the general state as a fallback.

Checking if your Stripe Invoices have address details

It's easy to check if Zamp's integration can work with your invoices.

  1. Login to Stripe and then navigate to Invoices.

  2. Once there, click into a few invoices and verify you see Billing details or Shipping details.

    1.

  3. In the event that your invoices are missing addresses, they will be ignored from being imported into Zamp. To correct these issues, you will need to add address details to your customer records and invoices.
